The answer my friends is this— yes, an Ivy League degree does help in some regards. For example, I’ve definitely noticed that I received many more responses to my resume after I received my M.F.A. from Columbia. However, what matters most these days seems to be your major and how it relates to the job you’re applying for.For example, if you aspire to write for The New York Times, a math degree from MIT isn’t going to help you.
Especially if you’re not completely sure what you want to study in college, your best bet is to pick a major that is broad and open— English, Liberal Arts, Communications are all good majors which has many career doors to choose from.
Whatever you do, don’t waste an Ivy education on a major that you will ultimately throw away. Pick your major wisely because once you do, changing it is not only a hassle that could delay your graduation but it could cost you thousands of dollars in extra class credits.
